Good Morning Class 4, I hope I find you well as we slip and slide into Tuesday.

Summary of Today’s Tasks

  1. Maths – Multiplication
  2. English
  3. Guided Reading
  4. Theme – Runes

Maths

Today we will be recapping our written multiplication skills, I have even filmed myself teaching! One thing I have learnt from the video is that I have clearly added an extra few pounds (by a few – a lot) during lock-down and I have no idea why I have kept my right arm so rigid throughout the video (hopefully they will improve, both my weight and my positioning).

Step 1: Watch the video below.

Step 2: Complete the fluency questions.

Step 3: Select a suitable starting point for the word problems (you do not have to complete the entire pack).

English

Today in English we are going to be continuing our work on Kennings Poetry, please watch the video below for information on Kennings and the activitiy. I’ve also included a copy of the presentation as a pdf on seesaw (I accept the video could have done with being zoomed in further).

Task:

Step 1) To warm you up, I would like you to have a go at guessing the subjects on the mini-quiz that I have posted to seesaw.

Step 2) Use the basic planning sheet on seesaw to plan your kennings about Grendel; remember the format, noun-verb. For an extra challenge can you use the same suffix on each verb?

Step 3) Write out your kennings as explained in the video.

Guided Reading

I have added an Anglo-Saxon themed reading comprehension activity pack onto seesaw for you to have a look at. I had to upload it as one pack and the answers are on there, no peaking!!!!!!! They are for your adult to read if needed.

Choose a suitable starting point, do not answer all of the questions. 1 star is the easiest, 3 stars is the hardest.

Theme

For our theme lesson we are going to be learning all about Runes;

Step 1: Watch the video below to learn all about Runes (I have included a copy of the presentation as a PDF below, this will allow you to view the runic alphabet – page 5 and to view the activities – page 12.

Step 2: Complete all three activities.

Home-learning – Monday 8th February

Good Morning Class 4, I hope I find you all well this morning.

Today sees us swing into the final week of the half-term and what a half-term it has been, not the one that we all expected to be having. Nevertheless, you have all done a cracking job with your school work and it has been a pleasure receiving all of your work.

Summary of Today’s Tasks

  1. English
  2. Maths
  3. Theme

English

Step 1:This week in our English sessions we are going to be writing a Kenning poem using Beowulf as our inspiration. The subject of our Kenning is going to be one of the main antagonists from Beowulf; Grendel. Today I would like you to draw a picture of what Grendel looks like to you. You may wish to scroll back through the blog and watch the PowerPoint presentation on Beowulf, or maybe search the internet for pictures of Grendel for inspiration. Remember to fill the page and draw with detail and include colour.

Step 2: After you have drawn your picture, I would like you to use single adjectives/nouns to describe what Grendel looks like e.g. Green, hairy, horns, gigantic. There is no limit as to the number of words but I want a minimum of 10.

Step 3: In a similar manner to step 2, I would like you to list verbs that describe how Grendel moves/carries out activities e.g. Roar, swiftly, noisily etc. There is no limit as to the number of words but I want a minimum of 10.

Maths

This week we are going to continue with our work on basic skills in maths, tomorrow we will be recapping multiplication. Hopefully, you all utilised your time on Friday to practice your multiplication skills. To get us warmed up and ready for today’s mini activities, I thought we could have a go at my favourite…

Below is one of my all time favourite investigations from NRICH, followed by 2 more tasks (you don’t have to complete all of them):

Tip: I would create a table, here’s my example (what I have completed so far):

Theme

Today, for your theme activity we are going to be exploring Sutton Hoo and the artifacts that were discovered there. To begin with I would like you to watch the first video below in order to find out some basic information about Sutton Hoo:

The next two videos are from the British Museum and discuss artifacts that were discovered, you do not have to watch these videos, but they do give a good insight into what was found (more videos can be found on the British Museum Youtube Account).

Task

Task 1)

On Seesaw I have posted a research grid and a supporting information sheet (you may be able to find the answers using the sheet , hint, hint or you could research your answers using a different method)

Task 2)

Now that you have learnt about Sutton Hoo, I would like you to create your own vlog about it. Some of you might have found the first video a little dull and thought that you could have done much better job (I’m sure you could have!). Think Horrible Histories.

Advanced Warning Materials Needed

Good Morning,

As part of our final week of the half-term there will be a number of crafting activities from Wednesday, please see details below:

Wednesday: Designing and creating own Anglo-Saxon/Viking Outfit

Thursday: Designing and creating helmets, shields, axes and coins. In addition to Den building.

Friday: Drawing materials.

Do not rush out to buy anything, I just wanted to put the message out there as many of the items are things that you may already have at home.

Take care

Mr Mallison

Home-Learning: Friday 5th February

Good Morning Class 4, I hope I find you all well this morning.

Once again you have all had a very productive week and it has been fantastic receiving all of your work. I have loved the Tik-Tok videos that were sent to me via Seesaw, they made me really smile, Mrs Ledingham loved them! I have also received a video of lambing in progress! Have a look below.

Summary of Today’s Tasks

  1. Spelling Test.
  2. Issue new spellings.
  3. Maths.
  4. RE.
  5. Finish of Friday.

Spelling Test.

You will see below your spellings that I set last Friday. Please could you ask an adult at home to test you on your spellings and then give you a score out of 10.

Year 4

Year 5

Spelling’s for next week

Here are your spellings for this week (I have also added a game for you to have a go at on purple mash):

Year 4

Year 5

Maths

Next week we are going to be focusing on the basics of multiplication, therefore today I would like you to spend sometime practicing your multiplication.

There are some cracking interactive games on topmarks:

https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/7-11-years/times-tables

You could also use TimesTable Rockstars:

I have challenged you all through Rockslam, if you beat me I will buy you a large chocolate bar. I have also set a battle between the girls and boys.

Want to avoid technology?

Idea 1# – Grab a couple of dice and practise your multiplication up to 6×6.

Idea 2# – Gran a couple of packs of cards place them side by side, turn over a card from each pile, multiply the cards together. But what about the picture cards? Well obviously Ace = 1, you can make up random questions if you get a picture card or ask somebody to tell you the value.

Idea 3# Ask somebody to set up a multiplication scavenger hunt. You could ask them to hide the answers and then they ask you a question and you have to find the answer. Or you could reverse this and they hide the question and they give you the answer and you have to then find the answer.

RE

Mrs Atkinson has once again supplied us with this week’s RE session, please see details below:

In RE this week, I thought we could look at an alternative celebration. Next week (Friday 12th February) is the start of the Chinese New Year. This year will be the year of the Ox can you watch the clip to see how and why the years were named after animals.  Task – can you draw a picture of an ox or can you find out which animal represents the year you were born and draw that one.  The animals are all very brightly coloured.

Finish off Friday

Now that you have completed all of today’s activities, you now have the opportunity to finish off any tasks that you ran out of time with.

Home-Learning: Thursday 4th February

Good Morning Class 4!

I hope you all enjoyed yesterday’s Well-being activities, I really enjoyed receiving all of your work away from screens.

Summary of Today’s Activities:

  1. English (GPS + Guided Reading Activity)
  2. Maths (Basics + extension task)
  3. Theme
  4. PE

English: GPS

Today we are going to develop our knowledge of relative clauses using the resources from the national academy website, please follow the link below for your task:

https://classroom.thenational.academy/lessons/to-develop-knowledge-of-relative-clauses-6mu6ae

English: Guided Reading

For today’s guided reading session we are going to looking at a Healthy Eating comprehension pack. I have upload three different activities onto Seesaw, you do not have to complete all of them. The activities range in difficulty (choose your own challenge):

Easier: The file named Tricky.

Middle: The file name Expert.

Harder: The file named Brain Box.

The answers are included on the sheet children, but remember they are for your adult at home not for you:

Adult at home guidance: Tricky is aimed at children who are working towards expectations to year 4. Expert is aimed at children who are at the age related expectation in year 4 or working towards expectation in year 5. Brain Box is aimed at children working at the age related expectation in year 5.

Maths

I was completely blown away by the addition work on Tuesday, you all did so well with your work. For today’s work..you guessed it, we are going to be spending some time recapping our knowledge of formal written methods of subtraction you do not need to complete each task, choose a suitable challenge.

To start with I would like you to take a look at the bbc bitesize website, it will help to refresh your memory:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zy2mn39/articles/zc78srd

Once again I have broken the activities down as follows:

Easier: Subtract 4 digits without exchanging.

Main: Subtract 4 digits with exchanging.

Harder: Subtract 5 digits

If you complete the above task and would like a further challenge I have also included an extension task (remember to select a suitable starting point to challenge yourself).

Science

This afternoon Mrs Plant would like you to learn about how we see light and how we see objects. She has sourced these two sessions from the Oakwood National Academy for you to have a go at, in addition to a science based reading comprehension activity which can be found on seesaw:

https://classroom.thenational.academy/lessons/how-do-we-see-light-cnk3ac

https://classroom.thenational.academy/lessons/how-can-we-see-objects-6ct6ct

PE

We had so much fun in school last week completing the Kids in America, Oti Mabuse dance session, I haven’t laughed that much in school in a long-time. Hopefully, we will have as much fun this week!

I have chosen another 80s classic in the form of 99 Red balloons! It is a bit trickier than last week, but if you stick at it, you will learn a superb dance routine that looks amazing! Ignore the live discussion at the beginning of the video, it refers to a home festival that they took part in back in April last year, you can skip forward if you want. Also about 9mins in the video cuts out part of a dance routine, I don’t know why, but if you ignore this and carry on as it just moves onto the next explanation of the dance routine. Furthermore, the video does cut elements out, but don’t worry it is only Oti and Marius practicing.

Home-Learning: Wednesday 3rd February

Good Morning Class 4!

I hope I find you all well today and I must say how impressed I have been with the maths work that you carried out yesterday. A great proportion of you completed the recap activity with ease and then moved onto the extension task, we will continue in this manner.

Today we are going to move away from the normal structure and carry out work linked to Children’s Mental Health week today. A big thank-you must be given to Mrs Altoft who collated these activities for us.

Today’s Tasks

Hi Class 4, as I mentioned above, we are going to have a bit of a different day today as it is Children’s Mental Health Week. The theme for this year is ‘Express Yourself’ so I thought today we would have a ‘no-screen’ day to concentrate on our well-being and give our eyes a rest from the computer and tablet screens.

‘Express Yourself’ is all about finding creative ways to share feelings, thought or ideas through things like art, writing, music, dance and doing things that make you feel good. It is not about being the best at something it is about finding a way to show how you are feeling and can help you feel good about yourself.

So, I am simply going to give you some ideas for the day, well lots of ideas, and allow you all to show us how you choose to ‘Express Yourself’. All of the activities can be found on Seesaw.

Maybe you will just choose one activity, maybe one from each page, maybe your favourite number from each page or maybe a few from the final page which links back to our theme last term – your choices are endless (well out of 100!)

All I ask is that at the end of an activity or the day you post some photos to show me what you chose to get up to – how you chose to ‘Express Yourself’

Have a lovely day

Home-Learning – Additional Maths activities 2.2.21

I have seen that you all appear to be flying through today’s maths activities. Therefore I have added additional tasks to seesaw.

You do not have to complete each sheet on the extension, choose a suitable starting point that provides you with a genuine level of challenge.

Also remember to write in full sentences using mathematical terminology when explaining your answers.

I have included the answers for your adult at home. So no peeking I will know!

Home-Learning Tuesday 2nd February

Good Morning Class 4,

I hope I find you all well this morning and that you are all able to access the blog today.

Summary of Today’s Tasks

  1. Maths
  2. Art
  3. Music

Maths

To warm up and get our brains working please see the countdown activity below (I have been very impressed with the work sent to me so far):

We are going to continue with our work on our basic skills today. Following on from our work on numbers bonds (well-done to those children that selected a suitable challenge/starting point), we are going to spend today recapping on written addition.

Please follow the link below, which will take you to advice and guidance on carrying out column addition.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zy2mn39/articles/z3kmrwx

Summary of the activities on seesaw (remember to choose a suitable starting point to challenge yourself:

Easier: 4 digit addition with no regrouping.

Main: 4 digit addition with regrouping.

Harder: more than 4 digit addition

Art

Over the past few weeks, I have been so pleased with the art work that I have received images of and seen in person at school. When considering the art task for this week I thought carefully about all the different creative tasks that you have completed whilst on lockdown: salt-dough pottery, Antony Gormely profile, a shield, a broach and a Anglo-Saxon village. Some of you even made a sword to go with your shield, which was a very wise idea as an Anglo-Saxon invader would certainly need a sword as well as a shield.

For this week I thought that we need to enhance our Anglo-Saxon credentials even further, therefore I would like you to create a Anglo-Saxon inspired necklace. Please see the instructons below:

Materials needed:

Circular card inserts from fruit boxes or from egg cartoons

PVA glue

Glue spreader

String

Cardboard

Sticky tape

Tin foil

A drinking straw

Colourful old magazines or junk mail

Instructions – please ignore the mention on vikings in the instructions.

Music

For your music session today children we will continue our work on duration and the theme for today’s lesson is syncopated rhythms. Please follow the link below:

https://classroom.thenational.academy/lessons/to-understand-syncopated-rhythms-70u34t

Home-Learning: Monday 1st February

Good Morning Class 4, I hope I find you all well this morning.

I hope you all had a suitably relaxing weekend and that you are all ready for the new week.

Summary of Today’s Tasks

  1. English inc GPS
  2. Computing
  3. Theme

English

GPS

Today we are going to spend some time learning about relative clauses, for some of your this may be more of a revision session, however it is always important to recap upon what we know and assess as to whether we could use these skills in our writing. Please follow the link below:

https://classroom.thenational.academy/lessons/to-explore-relative-clauses-6xjp4c

Main

Following on from feedback regarding the resource that I posted from the Oakwood National Academy, I have decided to take a different route with our unit on Beowulf. Therefore to begin with I feel we should explore who Beowulf is to begin with. Please watch the PowerPoint below. You will need to pause it on each new slide to read the information.

After you have watched the video, I would like you to create a story map to retell the events. I have borrowed an example used by Mrs Altoft.

Computing

Our computing unit this half-term has been based around writing for different purposes. On Purple Mash I have set you a 2Do which will allow you to display your learning in relation to Beowulf as well as show off the varying different writing techniques that you have been learning about in GPS. I would like you to use the 2Do to retell the story of Beowulf in your own words. Think very carefully about sentence openers, expanded-noun phrases and clauses.

Theme

Last week we spent some time learning about how Anglo-Saxons lived and then you created your very own Anglo-Saxon villages. I would now like you to imagine that you are advertising for new settlers to join you in your village. Each Anglo-Saxon had their own job to carryout therefore I would like you to create a job advertisement. Think carefully about the qualities you would need and the skills needed in order to be able to do the job properly. The downloadable sheet is available below in both PDF and word. It is also available on seesaw.
