Mr Mallison’s IT Tips – VIDEO LINK UPDATED

I’ve received a little bit of feedback regarding the Youtube video clips that have been shared for guided reading and that some children are struggling to following everything that is being stated on the video and then finding evidence to support their answers. I have a solution to support this; please watch the video that I created below:

Home-Learning Wednesday 13th January

Good Morning Class 4!

Today will see us complete Guided Reading, GPS, English, a mini-math activity, Well-being Wednesday Task and a Science activity. This week your science activity comes from the National Academy resources, but future sessions will be collated by your new science teacher Mrs Plant. When we return to school Mrs Plant will be delivering your Science lessons and I am sure that she has many fun and engaging tasks planned for you.

Summary of tasks:

  1. Guided Reading.
  2. GPS.
  3. English.
  4. Mini-Maths
  5. Well-being activity.
  6. Science.

Guided Reading.

To begin with I would like you to listen to part 2 of chapter 10:

You can either summarise Ahmet’s story using bullet points or a paragraph. Listen carefully to the beginning of the video.

GPS

Today, in your GPS session you will be exploring compound sentences:

https://classroom.thenational.academy/lessons/to-explore-compound-sentences-6wt3jt

English

Today in English we will be continuing with our work on our Non-Chronological Report. Much the same as we would in school we are going to take a step by step process. You will need to ensure that you have got a copy of your Anglo-Saxon research sheet (see image below) close by so that you can refer to this as you go along.

Submitting: You can complete this work using any one of the following three:

  1. Type in Microsoft Word or a suitable word processing software/app/Purple Mash 2Write apppreferred option.
  2. Type into the note pad on seesaw.
  3. Write onto paper and take a picture to submit.

Step 1:

Have a quick read through your research sheet to jog your memory of the research that you carried out. You will need this sheet as we complete each section of your NCR. But you can also use the internet as we go along to add extra ideas, but please put these in your own words (don’t just copy and paste).

Step 2

Lets think carefully about the purpose of a NCR. Jot down some ideas as to what you should cover/would like to tell somebody about the Anglo-Saxons.

When considering what you are going to write, imagine that the person who is going to read it, knows nothing whatsoever about them.

Step 3

We are going to write out opening section today.

Obviously, you need to ensure that you include a suitable title that links to what you are wiring about.

The purpose of the opening statement is to tell the reader what your NCR is going to be about. It is like the intro section on a television program, only you are putting your ideas down in words.

You should write in full sentences, grouping related information together in paragraphs.

I set you the challenge of including the following items in your NCR introduction:

  1. Rhetorical question.
  2. Relative clauses.
  3. Fronted Adverbials.
  4. Alliteration.

Check out my example:

Remember this is only an introduction, you do not need to write your entire report, one paragraph that sets the scene.

Mini-Maths Activity

Well-Being Wednesday

I have two activities for you to complete for well-being Wednesday. The first activity can be found on seesaw. I am going to create a display using the response I get from this task.

For your second task, I want you to have some time away from technology and complete the follow tasks:

Science

Today we are going to have a recap on light sources, but I would really like to find out more about what you know about light already and what you would like to find out more about.

When I was younger I always wondered why shadows didn’t have faces?

Record your thoughts/ideas and send them in through Seesaw.

The Best Good Morning Images | Inspire a Better Day

Good Morning Class 4!

I hope I find you all well this morning and ready for another wonderful day of activities. The quality of the work that you are sending over to me is getting better and better each day!

Here are some examples of the tasks that were sent into me yesterday:

An amazing pop-up card created by Cody over the weekend!

Guided Reading

I would like to start the day with guided reading and we will be exploring chapter 10. To begin with, please watch the video below and then answer the questions:

Questions,

Submitting your work:

Either, type your answers into the notepad feature on seesaw (preferred option) or write your answers on paper and take a photo (remember to zoom in so that I can see your work) and save into the home-learning folder.

Don’t forget to include the date and I can statement.

GPS

Today in our GPS session we are going to explore compound sentences using the resources from Oakwood:

If you would like to share your work with me please feel free to take a picture or use the notepad on seesaw. Remember to write the date and name of the activity you are completing e.g. I can identify and explore compound sentences.

https://classroom.thenational.academy/lessons/to-explore-compound-sentences-6wt3jt

Maths

For maths we are going to split into our separate year groups, please see below. However to get us warmed up I would like you to spend 5 minutes on the countdown numbers game (If you want to you can share your answers on seesaw).

I will share a solution tomorrow.

Year 5: Cubed numbers.

Before the Christmas break we explored squared numbers. Therefore our next step is to explore cubed numbers, we can remember that 2 squared is equal to 2×2. Cubed numbers are very similar, checkout this handy guide:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zyhs7p3/articles/z2ndsrd

Activity: to be found on seesaw. I have included the answers, but these are not for you to look at, they are for your adult at home! No peeking, I will know!

Year 4: Multiplying 3 numbers.

I have found this superb resource from the BBC that will help you with your learning.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/zr9xqfr

If you want to you can have a go at the quiz to start with, but it’s the video that is the key resource. If you have permission from home you can have a go at the game once you have completed all of the work.

Activity: After you have watched the video and read the information below (only if needed) you will find some activities on seesaw. I have included the answers, but these are not for you to look at, they are for your adult at home! No peeking, I will know!

Art

The Anglo-Saxons were superb at arts and crafts therefore there are many different things we can learn from them; find out more below:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zxsbcdm/articles/zwjq2hv

I believe that we should have a go at many different Anglo-Saxons crafts whilst we are learning from home. But our first activity will be pottery!

This will require help from an adult. but don’t panic it will not require the purchase of clay or any specialist equipment, simply a few store cupboard ingredients:

1 cup of plain flour

1/2 cup of salt.

1/2 cup of water.

Method:

Mix the flour and salt in a bowl. Slowly add the water until the mixture comes together into a ball.

Note: If you feel like you don’t have enough dough, simply repeat the above process.

I would now like you to shape your dough into one of the following items (putting your own spin onto it of course):

Next you will need to ask an adult to bake your design in the oven.

Pre-heat your oven to 120 degrees C.

Line a baking tray with baking paper

Carefully place your design onto the baking paper and bake for 2 hours.

NON-COOKING METHOD

Leave in a warm place and it will become hard on its own (may take up to two days).

Once set you can paint your design if you wish to do so.

How to submit: Take a suitable image and post onto seesaw.

Music.

Your final task for the day is to complete a music lesson. In school we would have been continue with our learning using the resources of Charanga, but unfortunately, these do not lend themselves very well to home learning. Therefore I have found this wonderful lesson from the government’s National Academy. The unit is based upon Duration and the first lesson focuses on Pulse, which is what we would have covered at school.

https://classroom.thenational.academy/lessons/to-understand-how-to-maintain-the-pulse-using-the-voice-and-body-60up2d

Feel free to share any photos onto seesaw.

Extension Activities:

Once again I have included some extension activities on seesaw (I’ve also added sound instructions, I know check me out, I.T. whizz!).

The Best Good Morning Images | Inspire a Better Day

Good Morning Class 4,

I hope you all had a wonderful, restful weekend and are ready to commence with our theme work. This week sees the launch of our unit on Buried Treasure! So dust off your shoes, sit-up straight and get ready for an epic adventure into the life of the Anglo-Saxons!

However I would like to start with celebrating some of the fantastic work sent over on Friday:

Guided Reading

I had an amazing idea on Friday of filming myself reading Boy at the Back of the Class so that we could continue with our whole class guided reading session. However, I took a quick look on YouTube and found a fantastic resource called the reading corner. However I am looking at uploading a video of me reading the class book at some point this week, just need to get my head around the technology (you know how good I am at school with this….not!)

Task:

I would like you to watch the video and then answer the questions.

Submitting your work:

Either, type your answers into the notepad feature on seesaw (preferred option) or write your answers on paper and take a photo (remember to zoom in so that I can see your work) and save into the home-learning folder.

GPS

For our GPS sessions we will be accessing the resources from Oakwood Academy. The lessons will progressively get harder and build upon knowledge gained in earlier lessons. The first one is relatively easy, but please persevere so that you can used to the format.

https://classroom.thenational.academy/lessons/to-explore-simple-sentences-cmwp8r

Anglo Saxon Ships

English

In our English sessions we are going to be writing a non-chronological report about the Anglo-Saxons, therefore today I would like you to spend some time researching these amazing travelers. But to begin with check out these videos on the Anglo-Saxons by Horrible Histories:

On seesaw I have posted a template for you to complete, along with a couple of websites that might be helpful with regards to your research.

Mini-Maths Task

Have a go at this game from NRICH.

You could play with a brother or sister, mum or dad, next doors cat…well maybe not…social distancing and own bubble rules…just find somebody at home.

Ignore the suggestion about playing Tug of War first (it is aimed at much younger children).

Computing

If we were in school today, we would have been starting on our Writing for Different Audiences unit. Using the Purple Mash scheme of work. Despite being at home, I feel that we can continue with our work on Purple Mash we just need to tweak it slightly.

Take a look at his newspaper that I picked up last week. Look closely at the font sizes, font style , newspaper name, headlines and subheadings, and think carefully about how the layout guides the reader. You may wish to discuss the layout with an adult. If you have a news paper at home you may wish to have a close look at the layout.

.

Task:

  1. Have a look at the boring newspaper articles on purple mash (saved as a 2do) and think carefully about how the layout could be improved (not the content; it can be left alone).
  2. Using the formatting tools, improve the layout.

Mr Mallison’s top tips:

To edit the text you should highlight it and then click on the large A icon:

When you click on the A icon you will be welcomed by a number of options (see below), rather than me explaining each tool, why not experiment?

Mr Mallison’s top tip #2: Compare your layout to an actual newspaper, discuss with an adult, how can I improve my work?

Extension Task: Create your own newspaper using the Blank Newspaper app on Purple Mash, simply search for it. Your newspaper could be dedicated to your hobby…a newspaper on model trains would be superb or golf. You could create a newspaper based on your favourite football team, a recent match, a current news event, your day, a fantasy piece about your pet…your daily news…the possibilities are endless.

Theme

We have a couple of activities to complete in our theme session today, and before we delve further into the history of the Anglo-Saxons I would like to know what you would like to find out, therefore using the template on seesaw I would like you to create a mind-map of questions detailing what you want to investigate and learn about.

We are now going to revisit our time line that we created last week and add more events to it; you may even need to make it even larger. Note for parents: the purpose of this activity is to give the children an idea of the key events in the Anglo-Saxon period, before we move onto more in-depth activities.

Using the two files below (the pictures and pdf) I would like you to add the information to your timeline and share your results on Seesaw by taking a photo.

I do not want you to print any of the files out.

I would like you to add the date and a written explanation of the event.

In order to fit all of the information on you may need to be creative if you’ve run out of space. Think about post-it notes, extra pieces of paper, arrows.

Extension Activities:

There are three extension activities on seesaw should you wish to have ago, but remember these are not mandatory.

Home-Learning: Friday 8th January

Good Morning Images For Whatsapp, Free Download HD Wallpaper, Pictures, Photos Of Good Morning - Mixing Images

Good Morning Class 4,

Once again, I am very impressed with the work that you submitted yesterday; here is a selection of the amazing work (please don’t be dismayed if your work hasn’t appeared yet, yesterday I received over 150 pieces of work!):

Remember, if you are struggling to use Seesaw, do not hesitate to get in touch with me.

Today’s Activities

Today, we will be finishing off the week with history, spelling/book review and maths.

History

For our history session I would like you to create a timeline. There are two elements to this activity;

To begin with I would like you to create a timeline of your family history and you can go as far back as you want. Check out my example below (I have included key moments, you can add any important dates, e.g. starting school, birth of siblings, birth of pets, holidays etc):

Second step: Can you add these key events from history to your timeline?

You may need to add an additional sheet of paper. YOU DO NOT NEED TO PRINT OUT THE PICTURES JUST WRITE DOWN THE DATE AND THE EVENT.

How to submit: take a photo and upload to the Home-learning folder on Seesaw.

Spelling

For your spelling activity you will need an adult to help out. Ask your adult to test you on the common misconception spellings listed below (you might think that these words are a little easy, however these are words that as a class we struggled with in places prior to Christmas). After they have tested you, I would like you to just practice the ones that you struggled with and then next Friday ask your adult at home to test you on these again.

Mr Mallison’s top tip for your adult helper: pop the words into actual sentences as you read them out, so that the child is able to identify which homophone they needs to spell.

Book Review

Earlier in the week I asked you to create a bookmark and then choose a book to begin reading. I do not expect you to have finished the book yet, but I would like you to review what you have read so far using the template below (I have uploaded to Seesaw and you should be able to write directly onto the template).

Maths

Once again, thank you very much for the fantastic work that you all completed in relation to the Christmas Present activity. I have selected four graphs and or tally charts for us to answer questions about.

Finally, if you have completed the maths activity and would like another task to complete you could spend some time on Times Table Rock Stars.

Extension Activities

In a similar vein to yesterday, after you have completed all of the tasks above there are a number of extension activities that you could have a go at on Seesaw, but do not start them until you have completed everything above.

Home-Learning: Thursday 7th January

Pin by Rian du Toit on Funny | Snoopy comics, Snoopy, Snoopy and woodstock

Good Morning Class 4,

Well done to all of the children who uploaded their work successfully onto Seesaw yesterday, here are some of the highlights:

Remember, if you are struggling to use Seesaw, do not hesitate to get in touch with me. CAN I ASK EVERYBODY TO ENSURE THAT WHEN YOU ARE SUBMITTING PHOTOS TO SEESAW THAT YOU ZOOM IN A LITTLE CLOSER, YESTERDAY I HAD A FEW PROBLEMS READING SOME OF THEM.

Today’s activities:

English

I was amazed by the riddles that I was sent yesterday, please see a selection of them below.

Your task is to solve the riddles, please use the notepad on seesaw, remember to save in the home-learning folder. If you are unable to use the notepad you could take a photo.

Maths

I had added a maths activity to Seesaw which involves collecting data about Christmas presents and then presenting the data using a bar chart. You should be able to record your information directly onto the sheets on Seesaw.

PE – Dance!

Time to get active class 4 and take part in a dance session with Dance Stars

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uFKhuq8fDPI

Extension Activities

In addition to the activities above you can also complete the following extension activities that are on Seesaw, but do not start these until you have completed all of the above activities in detail.

Home-Learning: Wednesday 6th January

92 New Good Morning Images With Nature Love Cute Funny

Good Morning Class 4,

I hope you are all well this morning and ready for today’s learning activities. There are three subject areas for you to study and you may complete them in any order you wish. Today, we will be covering; English, Art and Well-being. Depending on how we progress with the subject areas I may add additional subjects for each day, but there will always be a minimum of three.

For the vast majority of the tasks you will need to submit your work to Seesaw, if you have misplaced your QR code, do not panic. You can still complete today’s tasks and then upload later, simply ask an adult to contact the school office and we will be able to provide you will login solutions.

English

You may even wish to illustrate your sheet before submitting your work, but I would be careful with what you decide to draw as it might give the answer away. Maybe stick to Christmas themed drawings.

Submitting your task:

Please write on paper and then take a photo to add to Seesaw saving in the Home-Learning folder.

Alternatively, if you have the ability to do so you could type using the notes section on Seesaw, once again saving your work in the Home-Learning folder.

Art

Create your own booking mark linked to our theme, remember we will be studying the Anglo-Saxons and Vikings.

Be creative when choosing your resources, you want it to be long lasting so if you have any card at home this will help it to be strong. If you don’t have any card you may have some left over cardboard from Christmas cereal boxes in your recycling that might be helpful.

If you are struggling for ideas as to how to shape your bookmark you may wish to Google bookmark template, although you do not need to print if off, just take a look at the shape. You could also search for images of Vikings and Anglo-Saxons and then have a go at drawing these on your bookmark. Be as creative as possible, using suitable colour this could involve using coloured pencils, felt-tip pens, crayons, paint, anything that you may have at home.

After you have completed your bookmark, I would like you to choose a book that you are going to read over the next couple of weeks. Please ensure that you read at least two chapters by Friday as it will link to another activity.

How to submit your work: take a photo and upload to the home-learning folder on Seesaw.

Well-Being Wednesday

New Year's Resolutions: Ringing in the New with the Old | Psychology Today

Finally, I would like you create a list of a minimum of three new year’s resolution; explaining why you have chosen them. I would like you to think very careful about your resolutions and to ensure that they are meaningful. Ideas could include:

  1. Helping more at home, taking out the rubbish, tidying your room, setting the table.
  2. To learn to play the bag pipes.
  3. To improve my golf swing/lower my handicap index.

Explaining in detail why you have chosen your resolution.

How to submit your work:

Option 1: write your work on paper and take a photo and upload to the home-learning folder on Seesaw.

Option 2: write your work directly onto the notepad on Seesaw and upload to the home-learning folder.

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year - Madeira Island News Blog

Good Afternoon Class 4!

I hope I find you well on what should have been the first day of the spring term in school, however despite not being in school our learning journey will start in earnest tomorrow. I have to admit this is not the way in which I expected us to be welcoming in the new year. However, I would like to take this opportunity to say I hope you had a wonderful Christmas break and to say a massive thank-you for the extremely generous gifts (thank-you cards are waiting for when we are all back in school together).

To ensure that we continue with our learning I will upload a post to the blog each day containing activities for the day. Additionally, I will share examples of the work I receive so that we can celebrate our achievements. It is really important to check the blog each day and post responses using Seesaw so that I can keep a track of what you have been up to and provide additional support where needed.I must however stress the importance of internet safety, please see the video below (a reminder of the unit we completed in school at the start of the year):

If you need to contact me please do so through the class email address: class4brandesburton@gmail.com

Buried Treasure

Our leaning theme for his term is, “Buried Treasure”.  Upon first read of the title, one may think that we will be studying pirates! Alas, we won’t be hoisting the skull and cross bones above the Jolly Rodger. However, we will be studying great adventurers and settlers in the form of the Anglo-Saxons and Vikings. Collectively, we will investigate light and sound in Science as well as child-led investigations of the Anglo-Saxons and Vikings, exploring where they originated from, how they traveled here, how they lived and the impact that they had on the United Kingdom.  We will commence our work on Buried Treasure from next week, therefore this will we will complete some activities linked to Christmas that we would have completed had we been in school. It is my intention to use this week for us all to get used to remote learning and sharing our work via Seesaw and then we will be prepared to commence our theme from Monday.

Take care everybody and I will be in touch tomorrow morning.

Mr Mallison
