Computing

In our IT lesson today we are going to continue our work on animation, but this time we are going to be learning all about onion skinning! Check out my video below for a detailed explanation:

Theme

For our theme session today we are going to be learning about what made the vikings so successful as raiders and pillagers. The session is going to entail watching a couple of video clips and reading prior to then completing a creative activity which will blend your learning.

In summary Viking success was, largely, down to two things: their skill at building ships and their fearsome warrior culture.

What did you think to the video, children? I’m not sure that I would have made a very good viking, I wouldn’t be able play golf or pop to Marks and Spencer for snacks when I’m hungry. Anyway…I think you would have been much for successful, I would now like you to have a read through the information on the BBC bitesize website:

Task

Create a poster warning local Anglo-Saxons of Viking raids. Information could include how to tell if you are about to be raided (for example, boats sighted on the horizon) and what to do in the event of a raid (for example, sound the alarm or run for the hills).

Guided Reading

To blend in with our theme work and to allow the opportunity for cross-curricular learning I would like us to complete a Viking themed guided reading session today.

On Seesaw I have uploaded three different comprehension booklets. You do not need to complete all three booklets, simply choose a suitable starting point that gives the correct level of challenge (remembering that 1 star is the easiest and 3 stars are the hardest).

Today, we are going to spend our English lesson reinforcing our knowledge of expanded noun-phrases, I received some excellent work yesterday, however we are still forgetting to include adjectives to add detail to our description. I have split the lesson into two parts due to the number of activities that I would like you to complete.

Theme

I am very excited to be continuing with our theme work this afternoon. We are going to learning about where the Vikings came from. The video below will give you an introduction to where they came from and then I have posted a range of activities onto seesaw for you. I must apologise as this was not my intended video/activity, I have had a few IT issues today, but hopefully I will be able to rectify them and we will be exploring a few more exciting sessions.

Activities Note:

There are two activities for you to complete on Seesaw.

Once again I would like you to choose your own starting point (think carefully about your level of challenge).

On the timeline activity I do not expect you to print anything out (even though on the sheet it tells you to cut the items out), I would simply like you to transfer the information onto a sheet of paper to create your time line, in a similar manner to when you created your Anglo-Saxon timelines.

Today in English, we are going to continuing our work on prepositional phrases. To begin with I would like you to watch the video below which will outline today’s learning:

Task

Easiest:

Write in the first person about entering the dragons’ nursery and seeing the dragons. Remembering to describe the setting using adjectives and prepositional phrases. As an extension underline prepositional phrases with a coloured crayon and a ruler.

Middle:

Write in the first person to explain entering the the dragons’ nursery and seeing the dragons. You must include at least two prepositional phrases and a range of adjectives to describe the session. As an extension, underline your favourite prepositional phrase with a coloured crayon and a ruler.Write a sentence to explain why you have chosen this prepositional phrase as your favourite.

Hardest:

Write in the first person about entering the dragons’ nursery and seeing the dragons. You must include at least three prepositional phrases, a range of adjectives and a simile in Your writing. As an extension, underline your favourite prepositional phrase, adjective and simile with a coloured crayon and a ruler. You must then explain why you have chosen this phrase.

In the distance, I could see a group of grey, scaly dragons laid on top of one another.

Bonjour! We’re going to start today’s lesson with a little French poem. This is often used with French children to help them learn their numbers. I’m sure you know numbers to ten already – have a quick practice and shout them out…. GO!

OK now you are warmed up and ready let’s take a look at the poem.

Watch the video to hear the poem being read and to find out what your first activity is. Then pause the video whilst you complete the activity.

When you are ready, play the video again for aquick-draw game. The game will also give you the answers to the first activity so you can check your own work.

Now we’re going to look at creating some new sentence stems. J’adore means I love and je déteste means I hate. Can you translate these sentences?

Your final task for today is to used what you have learned today to create your own sentences like the ones above.

Challenge: Write the correct French word for each animal you choose instead of drawing a picture.

I hope I find you all well today? I must say that I am very impressed with the start that you have made to new half-term, well done! Edit: I’ve just watched the Prime-Ministerial address and I am so pleased that we are all going to be back in school on Monday 8th March! Time to celebrate!!!!

Some of you may be a little confused as to why we are exploring spelling for a second day in a row. However, I wanted to block sometime off that would allow us to formally practice our spellings as part of our school day. Rather than using the Look, Cover, Check method I would like you to have a go at one or two of these ideas which may make your practicing more fun:

I am going to split today’s learning objective; I can describe a setting using prepositional phrases over two days (if we were in school, we would probably have done this in one lesson, however I feel due to you needing to watch two videos that it would be wise to spread the lesson over two days).

I am so excited about our English unit, which is going to be guided by the amazing; How to Train your Dragon by Cressida Cowell. Throughout our unit new English unit I want to read the book to you, however for the first few chapters, I thought it would be really exciting to listen to the author read the book! She tells the story much better than I ever could!

Task 1:

Put your feet up, turn the volume up, close your eyes and listen to Chapter 1 only. PS: I love how many books she has staked everywhere!

I have posted three different activities onto Seesaw, and as explained in my video you need to select a suitable starting point for your ability level, please do not simply pick the first task because it is the easiest, challenge youself.

Here is a summary of the tasks:

Easiest: Select one of the characters and write in the thought bubbles what they are thinking about an event in the story and then in the heart how they are feeling about the event (please remember to tell me which event you are discussing).

Middle: Complete the emotions graph for hiccup. We have completed one of these previously in school, but to summarise, the first event on the graph is when Gobber blows the horn you then need to place a cross on the graph to show how you think he feels please note my example may be the wrong feeling:

Challenge: Using the emotions word bank below, can you assign each event with a suitable emotion?

After you have plotted each emotion on your graph you can join the plots in event order see example below (but remember my example is completely wrong!!!)

Hardest: Complete the emotions graph for the four characters detailed on the graph and add suitable emotion words next to each plot on the graph. You should also join each characters feelings as above.

Finally, we will also be using Cressida’s book How to be Viking for our Guided Reading sessions (we will return to the Boy at the Back of the Class as our class novel when we return to school).

Continuing our focus on the basics I would like to spend the next couple of weeks on shape which will hopefully take us up until us being back at school (government announcement pending).

Create a mind-map detailing the questions that you would like to answer as we progress through the unit (remember to push yourself – I would like more than 5 questions). Activity 2

Your next challenge is to build your den or hideout. If you are going to attack, you need somewhere to wait until the correct moment to attack. You might want to use cushions in the living room or get outside and build your den in the garden. Wherever you choose, be sure to post a photograph of you inside your den – maybe you could have your lunch in there!

Activity 3

Your next challenge needs a bit of imagination, I want you to carry out a ‘steal’ or ‘invasion’. You can do this in a number of ways. First you need to make something to ‘steal’ this could be a piece of jewellery or some coins.

Next, you could ask a grown up to hide your coins, you could hide them and make a map for someone to find them or you could hide some and a brother or sister could hide some and you could try to find each others. I can’t wait to see how you decide to do this task.

Activity 4

Your final challenge is to create an animation of your battle. You could use 2animate on Purple Mash, you might want to create an animation using lego or even make a video using yourself! It is upto you. Our computing topic after half term will be animation so I can use this task as an idea of our starting points after the hoilday.

Maths

For your maths today, we are going to have a recap on formal written division. I have created a short video for you to watch first.

After you have watched the video I would like you to use a suitable method to solve the questions and activities that I have posted onto seesaw. Please note: You do not need to solve both of the word problem packs, simply select which provides the most suitable challenge. Also use the method of division from the video that works best for you.

English

You may have remembered during my amazing performance in the English video yesterday (even though I used the unedited presentation) that I said that Kennings poetry is as much about the performance as the content. Therefore today, I would like you to create a video of you performing your poem.

The English task is shorter today as I expect it will take you longer to complete the maths activity and theme activity.

Theme

Today in your theme lesson I want you to be very creative!

We are going to be designing an Anglo-Saxon outfit. Your outfit could be for:

• Yourself.
• A model (action figure or doll).
• A uniform for an entire Anglo-Saxon army.

Step 1: To begin with you need to spend some time researching different types of Anglo-Saxon clothing, although the two people here look very dapper, there are many different choices and styles. You may have some books at home on Anglo-Saxons, if not you could use the internet to carryout your research.

Step 2: Design your outfit. Note: I have placed a very basic template onto seesaw that you could use, but you don’t have to if you don’t feel that you would need it.

Step 3: Label the materials that your outfit is made out of.

Step 4: Justify why you have made your design choices.

Extension Challenge: Grab some fabric and an adult helper and see if you can make your Anglo-Saxon outfit!
