Home-Learning: Monday 1st March

Good Morning Class 4,

I hope you all had a wonderful weekend and that you are ready for the final week of home-learning, only 5 days to go!

Summary of Today’s Activities

  1. Spelling
  2. English
  3. Maths
  4. Computing
  5. Theme

Spelling

For your spelling today I would like you to ask an adult at home to check your spelling in the same way that we do at school. Please see the spelling lists from last week below:

Year 4:

Year 5

Below is a list of spellings for the upcoming week:

Year 4:

Year 5

This week I have decided not to place a game on purple mash for you to practise to give us a little break from using technology to complete our work. I would like you to use the methods that I posted onto the blog last week to support your learning.

English

Children I have been blown away by the responses that I have received for your English work, you have crafted some amazing pieces of work. Today, we will be carrying out part B of our lesson from Thursday (hopefully you kept hold of your resources from Thursday as they will prove to be useful!).

Please start by watching the short video blow:

Maths

In maths we are going to continue our work on shape with the hope that we will get it completed prior to returning to school next week.

Year 4

In this lesson, you will be revising the names of different types of 2D shapes. Please follow the link below:

https://classroom.thenational.academy/lessons/to-compare-and-classify-2d-shapes-68r3ed

As always I have posted copies of the activities onto Seesaw.

Year 5

In this lesson, we will be learning to describe the properties of diagonals of quadrilaterals. Please follow the link below:

https://classroom.thenational.academy/lessons/2d-and-3d-shape-to-describe-the-properties-of-diagonals-of-quadrilaterals-6gvk2d

As always I have posted copies of the activities onto Seesaw.

Computing

In our IT lesson today we are going to continue our work on animation, but this time we are going to be learning all about onion skinning! Check out my video below for a detailed explanation:

Theme

For our theme session today we are going to be learning about what made the vikings so successful as raiders and pillagers. The session is going to entail watching a couple of video clips and reading prior to then completing a creative activity which will blend your learning.

In summary Viking success was, largely, down to two things: their skill at building ships and their fearsome warrior culture.

What did you think to the video, children? I’m not sure that I would have made a very good viking, I wouldn’t be able play golf or pop to Marks and Spencer for snacks when I’m hungry. Anyway…I think you would have been much for successful, I would now like you to have a read through the information on the BBC bitesize website:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/ztyr9j6/articles/zw3qmp3

BBC Breaking News (@BBCBreaking) | Twitter

Task

Create a poster warning local Anglo-Saxons of Viking raids. Information could include how to tell if you are about to be raided (for example, boats sighted on the horizon) and what to do in the event of a raid (for example, sound the alarm or run for the hills).

What I am looking for:

  1. Use of the full page
  2. Headings
  3. Subheadings
  4. Bullet points
  5. Viking inspired pictures.

Extension Activity

In characters as monks, write a letter to a friend or maybe even King Elthlred (asking him to send help) describing the Viking raid on Lindisfarne.

What I am looking for:

  1. Description of the event (utilise the resources above to help).
  2. Tell me what you hope will happen next.
  3. Tell me what you fear will actually happen next.
  4. Tell me who you think is responsible for the attack.
  5. Tell me what you think should be done about the attack.

Home-Learning: Friday 26th February

Good Morning Children!

I hope I find you all well this morning! Only 6 more days to go of home-learning, woop! woop!

Spelling

I really hope that the new spelling methods that I have shared thus far have been helpful. I’m going to share another two examples with you to have a go at today and over the weekend in preparation for your spelling test on Monday morning:

GPS

Over the previous half-term and prior to Christmas we covered a vast range of GPS areas, therefore today I would like you to have a go at the quiz sheets below to test your knowledge (don’t worry about printing the sheet, simply write your answers out on paper):

Year 4:

As always I have included copies of the worksheets on Seesaw.

Finish off Friday

We’ve reached that point in the week children where we can shout Yippee! It’s nearly the weekend.

But before you put your feet up, can you take a look back through the blog and complete any tasks that are still outstanding.

Home-Learning: Thursday 25th February

Good Morning Children!

I hope I find you all well this morning! Only 7 more days to go of home-learning, woop! woop!

Summary of Today’s Activities

  1. Guided Reading
  2. English
  3. Maths
  4. Theme
  5. PE

Guided Reading

To blend in with our theme work and to allow the opportunity for cross-curricular learning I would like us to complete a Viking themed guided reading session today.

Task 1

Read the information leaflet below on Viking Longships.

Task 2

On Seesaw I have uploaded three different comprehension booklets. You do not need to complete all three booklets, simply choose a suitable starting point that gives the correct level of challenge (remembering that 1 star is the easiest and 3 stars are the hardest).

English

Today, we are going to spend our English lesson reinforcing our knowledge of expanded noun-phrases, I received some excellent work yesterday, however we are still forgetting to include adjectives to add detail to our description. I have split the lesson into two parts due to the number of activities that I would like you to complete.

Task 1

Watch the video below. It will outline the activities and give you some tips. I have also posted copies of the resources onto Seesaw.

Final task, as explained in the video I was running out of battery time on my recording, so here are the details for the final task; I would like you to underline all of the expanded noun-phrases. on the sheet labelled as activity 3 (I have included a copy of the support sheet that I used in the video with the activity 3 sheet to support your understanding).

Maths

I am so impressed with the work that I have received over the past week in relation to shape, class 4 I salute you, you are doing so well, keep up all the hard work!

Year 4

Today year 4 we will be investigating angles within shapes:

https://classroom.thenational.academy/lessons/shape-and-symmetry-to-investigate-angles-within-shapes-6mtp4d

As always I have included copies of the worksheets on Seesaw.

Year 5

Today year 5 we will be classifying triangles:

https://classroom.thenational.academy/lessons/2d-and-3d-shapes-to-classify-triangles-6rupad

As always I have included copies of the worksheets on Seesaw.

Theme

I am very excited to be continuing with our theme work this afternoon. We are going to learning about where the Vikings came from. The video below will give you an introduction to where they came from and then I have posted a range of activities onto seesaw for you. I must apologise as this was not my intended video/activity, I have had a few IT issues today, but hopefully I will be able to rectify them and we will be exploring a few more exciting sessions.

Activities Note:

There are two activities for you to complete on Seesaw.

Once again I would like you to choose your own starting point (think carefully about your level of challenge).

On the timeline activity I do not expect you to print anything out (even though on the sheet it tells you to cut the items out), I would simply like you to transfer the information onto a sheet of paper to create your time line, in a similar manner to when you created your Anglo-Saxon timelines.

PE

We need to say a big thank you to Mr Barnes who has provided today’s PE session for us:

Home-Learning: Wednesday 24th February

Good Morning Class 4!

I hope I find you all well this morning! I must say that you have all impressed me greatly with your attitude to your learning over the past two days and I can firmly say that we are certainly now on countdown to getting back to school on Monday 8th March (only 8 more days of home-learning left to go)!

Summary of Today’s Activities

  1. English
  2. Maths
  3. Science
  4. French
  5. Well-Being

English

Today in English, we are going to continuing our work on prepositional phrases. To begin with I would like you to watch the video below which will outline today’s learning:

Task

Easiest:

Write in the first person about entering the dragons’ nursery and seeing the dragons. Remembering to describe the setting using adjectives and prepositional phrases. As an extension underline prepositional phrases with a coloured crayon and a ruler.

Middle:

Write in the first person to explain entering the the dragons’ nursery and seeing the dragons. You must include at least two prepositional phrases and a range of adjectives to describe the session. As an extension, underline your favourite prepositional phrase with a coloured crayon and a ruler.Write a sentence to explain why you have chosen this prepositional phrase as your favourite.

Hardest:

Write in the first person about entering the dragons’ nursery and seeing the dragons. You must include at least three prepositional phrases, a range of adjectives and a simile in Your writing. As an extension, underline your favourite prepositional phrase, adjective and simile with a coloured crayon and a ruler. You must then explain why you have chosen this phrase.

Here is the example sheet of phrases that I showed you in the video:

Here is my example piece of writing too:

Slowly, I walked into the cave, my heart was racing, under my foot was a pile of dragon poo, I jumped backwards onto a precarious, narrow, rocky ledge. I sighed loudly as I caught my breath, I thought that I could hear my heart beating in my head, I peered further into the cold, damp tunnel. In the distance, I could see a group of grey, scaly dragons laid on top of one another.

Maths

Hopefully you enjoyed your maths activities yesterday from the national academy and that it has helped to refresh your knowledge of shape.

Year 4:

Today year 4 we will build upon our angles knowledge by exploring acute and obtuse angles. It is really important to ensure that you watch the entire video and complete the mini-activities too as you go along.

https://classroom.thenational.academy/lessons/shape-and-symmetry-to-identify-acute-and-obtuse-angles-crtk0r

I have placed a copy of the worksheets onto seesaw.

Year 5

Today year 5 we are going to be identifying regular and irregular polygons by reasoning about equal sides and angles. In a similar vein to year 4 children it is really important to ensure that you watch the entire video and complete the mini-activities too as you go along.

https://classroom.thenational.academy/lessons/2d-and-3d-shape-to-identify-regular-and-irregular-polygons-by-reasoning-about-equal-sides-and-angles-69jp4c

I have placed a copy of the worksheets onto seesaw.

Science

In our science lessons over the coming weeks Mrs Plant has asked us to explore sound. We will spend a little time over the next couple of weeks utilising the resources from the National Academy and then she will pick up with the remaining elements when we return to school. Please follow the link below:

https://classroom.thenational.academy/lessons/what-is-sound-chh30r

French

Very kindly Mrs Platten has created a range of French lessons for us to complete. Unfortunately, I forgot to post lesson 3 onto the blog during the last week of last half-term. Therefore we are a lesson behind the other children, however we will get caught up this week. I know I say it every week, but Mrs Platten is epic at French! Please see details of the lesson below:

Bonjour! We’re going to start today’s lesson with a little French poem. This is often used with French children to help them learn their numbers. I’m sure you know numbers to ten already – have a quick practice and shout them out…. GO!

OK now you are warmed up and ready let’s take a look at the poem.

Watch the video to hear the poem being read and to find out what your first activity is. Then pause the video whilst you complete the activity.

When you are ready, play the video again for aquick-draw game. The game will also give you the answers to the first activity so you can check your own work.

Now we’re going to look at creating some new sentence stems. J’adore means I love and je déteste means I hate. Can you translate these sentences?

Your final task for today is to used what you have learned today to create your own sentences like the ones above.

Challenge: Write the correct French word for each animal you choose instead of drawing a picture.

À bientôt!

Home-Learning: Tuesday 23rd February

Good Morning Children,

I hope I find you all well today? I must say that I am very impressed with the start that you have made to new half-term, well done! Edit: I’ve just watched the Prime-Ministerial address and I am so pleased that we are all going to be back in school on Monday 8th March! Time to celebrate!!!!

Image result for guinea pig celebration

It’s great to know that we know only have 9 more days of online learning until we can all get back into school. Therefore, lets keep going and push on and keep up with all your amazing effort and we will all be back together again soon.

Summary of Today’s Activities

  1. Spelling
  2. English
  3. Maths
  4. DT
  5. Music

Spelling

Some of you may be a little confused as to why we are exploring spelling for a second day in a row. However, I wanted to block sometime off that would allow us to formally practice our spellings as part of our school day. Rather than using the Look, Cover, Check method I would like you to have a go at one or two of these ideas which may make your practicing more fun:

English

I hope you all enjoyed yesterday’s English as much as I did! Personally, I believe that this English unit is going to be epic!

I am going to split today’s learning objective; I can describe a setting using prepositional phrases over two days (if we were in school, we would probably have done this in one lesson, however I feel due to you needing to watch two videos that it would be wise to spread the lesson over two days).

As explained in the first video, there are two parts to today’s English lesson. Please start by listening to video 1 below:

Task 1: Now that you have watched the video, I would like you to jot done some notes on how many dragons there were and where they could be found. You do not need to send this information to me, it is just to help your thinking in later tasks.

Task 2: Watch the second video below and then complete the tasks outlined beneath.

  1. Create your own dragon.
  2. Select range of locations that your dragon could find itself in and use prepositional phases to explain where it is.

Maths

Hopefully you enjoyed your maths activities yesterday from the national academy and that it has helped to refresh your knowledge of shape.

Year 4:

Today year 4 will build upon comparing and ordering angles by exploring right angles, once again using the resources from the national academy to support our learning:

https://classroom.thenational.academy/lessons/shape-and-symmetry-to-identify-right-angles-75jkad

I have placed a copy of the worksheets onto seesaw too.

Year 5

In a similar vein to the year 4 children, we are going to utilizing the resources from the national academy to support our learning, today we are going to be focusing on part 2 of identifying, describing and classifying shapes:

https://classroom.thenational.academy/lessons/2d-and-3d-shape-to-identify-describe-and-classify-shapes-based-on-the-properties-part-2-6mrkgt

I have placed a copy of the worksheets onto seesaw too.

DT

Much like our English unit, I am very excited about our DT unit for this half-term we are going to be exploring Viking Clothing, please see the video below:

Here is a range of websites that you could access to complete the activity:

http://www.vikingsofmiddleengland.co.uk/viking-textiles.html

http://wn.com/viking_age_clothing

http://www.topicpod.com/vikings/what_vikings_wear_all.html

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/clips/zksfb9q

Music

To finish off our day we are going to continue our work on Duration in music, focusing on Ostinatos today, please follow the link below for more details:

https://classroom.thenational.academy/lessons/to-explore-ostinatos-6wvk8t

Home-Learning: Monday 22nd February

Welcome back to fingers crossed what will be the last two-week installment of home-learning. Hopefully, Boris Johnson’s statement this evening will allow us all to return back to school on Monday 8th March. It would be so much better to see you all in person rather than through the home-learning platform. Although, I must say that you have collectively produced some amazing work and it has brightened up my day receiving it.I trust you have all had a restful half-term and recharged the batteries and are ready to recommence our learning journey. Therefore, lets comb our hair, brush our teeth, pull our socks up and get back to it…here is the plan for today:

Summary

  1. Spelling
  2. English
  3. Maths
  4. Computing
  5. Theme

Spelling

To kick off the week I am going to issue you with your spellings. We will test you on these on Monday 1st March.

Year 4

We will be focusing our learning this week on the ‘tion’ sound. Here is your list below:

As always I have included a game on Purple Mash, should you wish to use an electronic method of practicing.

Year 5

My apologies year 5, after checking the blog to inquire which list I needed to issue you with I discovered that I had given you the same list two weeks in a row, sorry! Here are your correct spellings for this week:

As always I have included a game on Purple Mash, should you wish to use an electronic method of practicing.

English

I am so excited about our English unit, which is going to be guided by the amazing; How to Train your Dragon by Cressida Cowell. Throughout our unit new English unit I want to read the book to you, however for the first few chapters, I thought it would be really exciting to listen to the author read the book! She tells the story much better than I ever could!

Task 1:

Put your feet up, turn the volume up, close your eyes and listen to Chapter 1 only. PS: I love how many books she has staked everywhere!

Watch my video below and complete the activity that I have set out in the video.

Task 2

Listen to both parts of Chapter 2.

Task 2

I have posted three different activities onto Seesaw, and as explained in my video you need to select a suitable starting point for your ability level, please do not simply pick the first task because it is the easiest, challenge youself.

Here is a summary of the tasks:

Easiest: Select one of the characters and write in the thought bubbles what they are thinking about an event in the story and then in the heart how they are feeling about the event (please remember to tell me which event you are discussing).

Middle: Complete the emotions graph for hiccup. We have completed one of these previously in school, but to summarise, the first event on the graph is when Gobber blows the horn you then need to place a cross on the graph to show how you think he feels please note my example may be the wrong feeling:

Challenge: Using the emotions word bank below, can you assign each event with a suitable emotion?

After you have plotted each emotion on your graph you can join the plots in event order see example below (but remember my example is completely wrong!!!)

Hardest: Complete the emotions graph for the four characters detailed on the graph and add suitable emotion words next to each plot on the graph. You should also join each characters feelings as above.

Finally, we will also be using Cressida’s book How to be Viking for our Guided Reading sessions (we will return to the Boy at the Back of the Class as our class novel when we return to school).

Maths

Continuing our focus on the basics I would like to spend the next couple of weeks on shape which will hopefully take us up until us being back at school (government announcement pending).

Year 4

Today children we are going to be exploring shape and symmetry: Compare and Order Angles; using the National Academy resources. Below is the link to the lesson. In addition to this resource I have also uploaded a copy of the activities and worksheet to seesaw so that you do not have to print anything out (if you don’t want to).

https://classroom.thenational.academy/lessons/shape-and-symmetry-to-compare-and-order-angles-c4wpcr

Year 5

Today children we are going to be exploring 2D and 3D shape: To identify, describe and classify shapes based on the properties (Part 1); using the National Academy resources. Below is the link to the lesson. In addition to this resource I have also uploaded a copy of the activities and worksheet to seesaw so that you do not have to print anything out (if you don’t want to).

https://classroom.thenational.academy/lessons/2d-and-3d-shape-to-identify-describe-and-classify-shapes-based-on-the-properties-part-1-6dhpac

Computing

Our IT unit for this half-term is animation, for today’s session I would have set you a 2DO on purplemash. If you watch the video below it will outline what I would like you to do:

Please note, today’s session is rather basic, it will become more challenging, I just want you to have a play around with the app and find out what you can do with it.

Theme

If you haven’t guessed it already our learning this half-term is mainly going to be centered on the Vikings. I would however like to find out what you would like to learn about the vikings.

Task

Create a mind-map detailing the questions that you would like to answer as we progress through the unit (remember to push yourself – I would like more than 5 questions). I have included a copy of the file below on Seesaw, but you can simply write your questions out on paper if you want to spend time away from electronic devices.

Home-Learning: Friday 12th February

Good Morning Class 4!

I hope I find you well this morning! Oh my! Have I been impressed with the work sent to me yesterday, your dens and outfits are amazing, here is a selection of the fantastic work that has been sent to me this week (please note I will post additional photos from yesterday later today):

Once again, we must say a big thank you to Mrs Altoft for the resources for today’s sessions:

Firstly, like yesterday we have the chance to join in with the Jorvik Centre’s live sessions. If you missed yesterdays, here is the link to today’s at 10am and 2pm. (I think the content will be very similar to yesterday)

https://jorvikthing.com/event_category/schools-live-stream/

Today’s Tasks

  1. School Trip
  2. Jorvikanory
  3. Viking Games
  4. Art

Right, onto today’s challenges…

Activity 1 – We are going on a….

Well, a virtual one! Click on the link below for a trip around the Jorvik Viking Centre!
https://jorvikthing.com/event/360-virtual-tour/
Wow! I hope you enjoyed that. Next, I would like you to make a poster or information sheet to explain some of the things you found out and saw. Please add drawings and facts to make it look really effective.

Activity 2 – Jorvikanory – As part of their Jorvik thing, the Viking Centre has arranged for some authors to talk about and read some of their books set in Viking times. Have a click of the link below and choose one to have a listen to, you never know, you might enjoy it so much that you want to get the book yourself.
https://jorvikthing.com/event_category/jorvikanory/

Activity 3 – Viking Games
The Vikings liked to play different types of board games. Have a watch of this video to find out about a game called Hnefatafl.
https://jorvikthing.com/event/hnefatafl-viking-board-game/
It sounds a little bit confusing to me!
Another game they used to play was called Nine Mens Morris. Have a go for yourself…(this is a bit simplier – I managed to get the hang of it but didn’t win!)
https://www.mathplayground.com/logic_nine_mens_morris.html

Activity 4 – So, now we are officially Vikings and after half term, we will continue to explore more about Viking way of life. For your last challenge today, I would like you to draw a Viking…
https://youtu.be/08FVs4Cvq3o
I can’t wait to see your finished pieces of artwork!

Have a lovely half term. Stay safe and I will see you online on Monday 22nd February.
Mr Mallison

Home-Learning: Thursday 11th February

Good Morning Class 4,

I hope I find you all well today.

A massive thank-you needs to be sent to Mrs Altoft who has created the blog post and activities for today and tomorrow, please see the details below:

Today we plan to move onto Vikings through a fun day of building, battles and invasions. (Feel free to wear your outfits you made yesterday if you wish!)

A quick link that may be interesting to you….The Jorvik Viking Centre have set up a livestream at 10am and 2pm. You may wish to have a watch; the link is below.

https://jorvikthing.com/event_category/schools-live-stream/

Today’s Tasks

  1. Building Battle Equipment
  2. Building your den or hideout
  3. Plan and carry out your ‘steal’
  4. Animation of your battle

Activity 1

If we are going to have an Anglo-Saxon or Viking battle, we need the equipment to do so.

Start by watching this video about helmets to give you some ideas…

https://jorvikthing.com/event/helmets/

Your first challenge is to make a shield, helmet, sword or axe. Think carefully about your designs and then use some card to make them.

Here is a link to show you how to make a shield… https://www.hobbycraft.co.uk/ideas/kids/how-to-make-a-viking-shield

And one for a helmet… http://www.stormthecastle.com/how-to-make-a/make-an-easy-viking-helmet.htm

I can’t wait to see your finished designs – remember to post your work on seesaw.

Activity 2

Your next challenge is to build your den or hideout. If you are going to attack, you need somewhere to wait until the correct moment to attack. You might want to use cushions in the living room or get outside and build your den in the garden. Wherever you choose, be sure to post a photograph of you inside your den – maybe you could have your lunch in there!

Activity 3

Your next challenge needs a bit of imagination, I want you to carry out a ‘steal’ or ‘invasion’. You can do this in a number of ways. First you need to make something to ‘steal’ this could be a piece of jewellery or some coins.

Next, you could ask a grown up to hide your coins, you could hide them and make a map for someone to find them or you could hide some and a brother or sister could hide some and you could try to find each others. I can’t wait to see how you decide to do this task.

Activity 4

Your final challenge is to create an animation of your battle. You could use 2animate on Purple Mash, you might want to create an animation using lego or even make a video using yourself! It is upto you. Our computing topic after half term will be animation so I can use this task as an idea of our starting points after the hoilday.

I hope you enjoy the day and have lots of fun becoming a Viking. I can’t wait to see how you attacked the day on seesaw. Mrs A

Home-Learning: Wednesday 10th February

Good Morning Class 4!

I hope I find you all well this morning and suitable defrosted following the wintery weather that we have had over the past few days.

Summary of Today’s Tasks

  1. Maths: recap of our division skills.
  2. English
  3. Theme

Maths

For your maths today, we are going to have a recap on formal written division. I have created a short video for you to watch first.

After you have watched the video I would like you to use a suitable method to solve the questions and activities that I have posted onto seesaw. Please note: You do not need to solve both of the word problem packs, simply select which provides the most suitable challenge. Also use the method of division from the video that works best for you.

English

You may have remembered during my amazing performance in the English video yesterday (even though I used the unedited presentation) that I said that Kennings poetry is as much about the performance as the content. Therefore today, I would like you to create a video of you performing your poem.

The English task is shorter today as I expect it will take you longer to complete the maths activity and theme activity.

Theme

Image result for anglo saxon clothing

Today in your theme lesson I want you to be very creative!

We are going to be designing an Anglo-Saxon outfit. Your outfit could be for:

  • Yourself.
  • A model (action figure or doll).
  • A uniform for an entire Anglo-Saxon army.

Step 1: To begin with you need to spend some time researching different types of Anglo-Saxon clothing, although the two people here look very dapper, there are many different choices and styles. You may have some books at home on Anglo-Saxons, if not you could use the internet to carryout your research.

Step 2: Design your outfit. Note: I have placed a very basic template onto seesaw that you could use, but you don’t have to if you don’t feel that you would need it.

Step 3: Label the materials that your outfit is made out of.

Step 4: Justify why you have made your design choices.

Extension Challenge: Grab some fabric and an adult helper and see if you can make your Anglo-Saxon outfit!
